{"id":687,"date":"2015-07-23T19:00:44","date_gmt":"2015-07-23T19:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/?p=687"},"modified":"2018-05-09T17:05:22","modified_gmt":"2018-05-09T17:05:22","slug":"687","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/?p=687","title":{"rendered":"Clocking off: a dip in Lake Geneva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Few are the major cities that afford outdoor swimming at their very centre.\u00a0 Geneva, by virtue of its site at the head of one of Western Europe\u2019s largest lakes, has always been an exception.\u00a0 There are several points at which the water is accessible to bathers in the city centre.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bains-des-paquis.ch\/Home.html\">Bain des Paquais<\/a> is the most popular and longest established, however.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paquis3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-690\" src=\"http:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paquis3-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"Paquis3\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paquis3-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paquis3-1024x737.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cBain des Paquais is Geneva at its most relaxed and informal\u201d, says Jenny Holdcroft, an Australian, who has lived in and around the city for 14 years.\u00a0 \u201cIt is one of the few places where the Genevan\u2019s let down their guard\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Entry is just CHF 2 and access is over a bridge from the Quai de Mont Blanc, on to what is essentially an island in the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Facilities when you get on the island are basic, most people use a towels to change, for example. \u00a0 There are a wide variety of ways to enter the water, however, from the rock beach on the bank that faces the lake to the pontoons that look back to the city.\u00a0 The real appeal, though, is the glorious water.\u00a0 During a July heatwave this had reached 24 degrees centigrade, and it has a clean, clear freshwater quality that is an unusual joy.\u00a0 The smooth rocky bottom is clearly visible, as is a healthy range of water-born vegetation.\u00a0 Even at this temperature, the water is a heavenly antidote to the searing city\u2019s sweaty frustrations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parquis2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-691\" src=\"http:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parquis2-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Parquis2\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parquis2-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tim-dawson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parquis2-1024x748.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The lake is surprisingly shallow around the swimming area &#8211;
